Resort Development in Jurien Bay

The Chamber welcomes the proposal for what is certainly the largest resort development between Perth and Broome. We see this as the kind of development which will lead to a hospital and senior high school for Jurien Bay, and lead to the infrastructure which will make Jurien bay truly deserving of its place as the regional centre.

We urge the existing businesses of Jurien to see the potential for expanding into new premises within the complex and/or taking advantage of new markets which the resort will bring. Existing residents of Jurien are invited to consider the new business opportunities which may arise for them.

RSL Care WA Retirement Village.

Information from the Moora Advocate:

Construction is well and truly underway on RSL Care WA's 98 unit retirement village.

RSL Care WA’s special projects manager Ken Hamilton said RSL Care WA was committed to being the state’s leader in high-quality retirement village living.

“We seek to achieve this in a range of residential and community settings, of which Jurien Bay Village is one,” he said.

Building started on May 2 for 98 low maintenance units, incorporating nine different floor layouts.

“This coastal community caters for a broad spectrum of retirement village living, from all walks of life and in our villages we seek to achieve a genuine sense of community – retirement will never be boring here,” Mr Hamilton said.

The site for this development is one kilometre from the marina, within walking distance to the town and shopping precinct, opposite the golf course, tennis courts, bowling green and is also close to the medical centre.

Convenience for residents is a priority and thus they need never leave the Village as it will have attractions built in, with onsite resources including a community centre, gymnasium, a well-appointed work shop, swimming pool, library, hair dressing salon and a restaurant quality dining area in which one can enjoy a glass of wine or a coffee.

Of the 98 units being constructed, 70 per cent of the units will include three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a double garage, with the remaining 30 per cent of units, being two-bedroom, two-bathroom and a single garage.

All units will be provided with airconditioning to the main bedroom and the lounge living area.

An emergency call system which is monitored 24 hours a day will be available to all units and the monitoring company will inform the village or a nominated person who will respond in an emergency.

Despite popular belief, RSL Care WA provides care to both veterans and the wider community - caring for aged and disabled ex-service personnel, war widows and the aged and disabled in the general community.

Construction by BGC will take about three years to complete.

An onsite sales office is open, and Ken Hamilton is on site for several days each week.

Three new FADs or Fish Aggregating Devices are now in the waters off Jurien Bay.

For more details, or for a fishing charter to get you there, contact Whitey at Seasport Tackle Jurien Bay: 08 9652 1242 or email whi...@bigpond.com

From The Sunday Times 19/12/10:

Readers of this column will recall that last June I discussed plans to launch new FADs (fish aggregating devices) off the Jurien Bay coast to enhance recreational fishing around the popular holiday town.
The exciting news is the new FADs are now in the water, having been launched just before the end of the demersal ban, and should offer some exciting fishing over summer and beyond as they become established.
Local charter and tackle shop operator Craig White used his boat, Valkoista, to launch the three FADs – called Seasports, PGFC and Red FM.
Craig, or Whitey as most people know him, came up with the idea and the Shire of Dandaragan took it on board, approving the suggestion and agreeing to allocate funds from the Royalties for Regions program and its own coffers for the FADs.
Despite a bit of wind and swell on the big day, Craig said this week the launch went without a hitch and they were back at port six hours after setting out for deployment.
He had assistance from representatives from the Department of Fisheries and also the Perth Game Fishing Club, which has its own FADs off the metro coast.
Craig expects the FADs to start to attract numbers of fish almost straight away.
“The Perth ones had fish arrive on them within three days,” he said.
“Dolphinfish could appear immediately and then within a few weeks I wouldn’t be surprised if tuna come around them.
“It looks like a very exciting development for fishing around Jurien.”
Craig said there was pelagic action noted while they were deploying the FADs, a good sign for what lies ahead.
“The water temperature was around 21 degrees, and birds were working baitschools and tuna within the vicinity of the FADs,” he noted.
He is hopeful billfish may turn up around the FADs as well, having seen them off Jurien before without catching any.
The three FADs are roughly 6.5 nautical miles apart, which equates to about an hour’s trolling, and will stay in the water until around July next year.
All three are in around 200m of water and just over 20 nautical miles from the Jurien Marina.
The full coordinates and details are listed below and it should be noted that mooring on the FADs is not permitted.
Jurien has long been a favoured destination for boat anglers, with great offshore angling for demersals like dhufish, pink snapper and baldchin groper, as well as pelagics such as spanish mackerel and tuna.
With the new FADs in and Indian Ocean Drive now open and cutting a chunk of time off the drive, Jurien is likely to become even more of a favourite for anglers looking for quality fishing not far from Perth.
If you don’t have your own boat, simply give Craig a call at Seasport Charters on 9652 1242 to book a day out on one of his Jurien charters.
Or if you are looking for advice on fishing the FADs, drop in on Craig at Seasport Tackle on Roberts Street in the centre of town.
